What a dress template is used for

In fashion design, a flat sketch (or technical flat) is a clean line drawing of a garment laid flat, showing its shape, seams and details as they would be made. Designers use flats to communicate with pattern makers and factories and to plan collections. A dress template is a pre-drawn outline — a silhouette — that you trace or draw over to create flats quickly and consistently. Templates are also used by students learning garment construction, by home sewists planning a make, and by anyone creating a mood board or portfolio.

What is in the template pack

How to draw a dress flat

  1. Choose the closest silhouette and print it (or place tracing paper over it).
  2. Draw the neckline and any collar, keeping both sides symmetrical — draw one half and mirror it if needed.
  3. Add sleeves: sleeveless, cap, short, three-quarter or long.
  4. Mark seams, darts, pleats and gathers with solid lines, and topstitching with dashed lines.
  5. Add closures: zips, buttons, ties.
  6. Draw the back view on a second template.
  7. Note fabric, colour and trims on the design sheet.

Keep lines clean and consistent: a heavier line for the outline and a finer line for internal seams makes flats easy to read.

Flats versus fashion illustrations

A fashion illustration shows a garment on an elongated figure (a croquis) to convey mood and movement. A flat shows the garment as it will actually be constructed, with realistic proportions and no body. Both are useful: illustrations sell an idea, flats make it buildable. The templates in this pack are flats, so they work well for spec sheets and sewing plans.

Who it is for

Fashion students, independent designers, sewing enthusiasts, costume makers and teachers running textiles or design classes. Print the sheets on standard paper, or import the PDF into a tablet drawing app and draw on a layer above.

Formats

Templates and design sheets are print-ready PDFs (US Letter; they print on A4). Spec, measurement and planner sheets come as editable Word and Excel files.

Adapting a silhouette

Most designs start from a basic silhouette and change one or two elements. Lengthen an A-line into a midi, add a flounce to a sheath hem, swap a scoop neck for a square neck, or turn a shift into a tunic by shortening it and adding side splits. Drawing several variations on the faint templates side by side is a quick way to explore a design before committing to fabric.
